AN INNERLEITHEN schoolboy with eight Blue Peter badges is running the equivalent of a marathon to raise money for charities.

Eleven-year-old Ian Campbell was watching the BBC's Big Night In when he decided to get involved.

Starting last Wednesday with a target of £100, he has been running 2.6 miles every day and will cross the finish line today (Friday, May 8).

His mum Lynne said this week: “He was looking for a challenge to motivate him as he is missing going on the school P7 residential to London last week.

“The target has now increased twice because of the brilliant support he has received. His new target is £350 and he’s currently raised £266.”

The money raised will help charities and projects in the UK to provide vital emergency support during the pandemic.

This includes making sure people are safe from harm and mentally healthy, while having access to food, warmth and shelter.

Ian has been running different routes from his house in Princes Street to the golf course and to the neighbouring village of Walkerburn.

The youngster said: “It’s been hard sometimes being bothered to go and do it but once I’m out it’s usually OK.

“It’s easier if I get up and do it first thing when it’s cooler, then I get a cooked breakfast when I get back.”

The St Ronan’s pupil likes to keep active – playing football for Leithen Vale and Penicuik Athletic.

And he says the marathon will help him when he returns to the sport.

“I’m doing it for the charities that need lots of help just now and to keep up my fitness for when I can play football again,” he said.

“I’d like to thank everyone for sponsoring me – it’s made me want to do it more and keep going.”

Gold Blue Peter badges are awarded rarely.

It’s taken the nation’s hero Captain Tom Moore 100 years to get his hands on one after raising £33m for the NHS.

But with eight badges already pinned to his chest, this youngster is one step forward in achieving that prestigious feat.
