CARERS in the Borders will receive an extra one-off payment of £230.10 under new plans.

The Scottish Government has put forward legislation to help unpaid carers in the belief that many are struggling with the impact of coronavirus.

If passed, the law will give around 1,275 carers in the Borders extra cash in June, according to MSP Paul Wheelhouse.

The South of Scotland representative welcomed the proposals, hailing carers for their "incredible" work.

Mr Wheelhouse, of the SNP, said: “This one-off payment will be a boost for carers who are on low incomes and have very demanding roles, often working round the clock every day to provide unpaid care services to a disabled child or an older adult with care requirements.

“This additional payment is a recognition that carers are providing vital support to family, friends and neighbours, and playing an absolutely crucial role in our current, collective efforts to suppress the coronavirus."

The extra support will exist alongside the usual carer's allowance.
