UP to 96 workers face losing their jobs with news that a Borders factory will be sold.

Coat hanger company Mainetti, which has a warehouse in Jedburgh, has announced plans to move operations to one site in Wrexham, Wales.

Mainetti's regional managing director Jim Hutchison said: "We acknowledge this announcement will have come as a shock and have not got to this announcement today without a lot of thought and consideration."

The company says 96 workers are at risk in the production, warehouse and operations divisions.

But finance and sales staff will continue to work in Jedburgh.

Mr Hutchison said: "Recognising the big impact that this announcement will have on the local community, Mainetti propose to sell the site to its associate company Emtelle UK Limited.

"Emtelle are a growing business who require more space to expand their operations in Jedburgh.

"Our proposal is that Emtelle will take over the factory space that is vacated and Mainetti will rent space back from them.

"Emtelle will have an immediate requirement for staff and some Mainetti employees will transfer to them.

"Mainetti will also support staff who wish to relocate to the Wrexham facility to reduce the redundancy impact.

"We acknowledge this announcement will have come as a shock and have not got to this announcement today without a lot of thought and consideration.

"We realise that the consultation process while people are furloughed and following social distancing guidelines is a new and difficult situation for everyone and obviously makes face to face contact very difficult.

"We appreciate this and will do our utmost to ensure a fair consultation process.

"We fully appreciate that this is not good news, but the current pandemic means we have to make changes to ensure the UK business is sustainable for the future."
