A MASKED man launched a daytime attack on a woman at a "popular" exercise location, say police.

Officers are appealing for information about the assault in Hawick, which took place at around 3.30pm yesterday (Wednesday, June 3).

The offender, who was wearing a balaclava, left the 24-year-old victim needing treatment at the Borders General Hospital (BGH).

Detective Constable Bruce Dodds, of Galashiels CID, said: "Any small piece of information could prove significant in our enquiries as we piece together the circumstances of what has happened and why."

Officers say the attacker approached the woman from behind while she was walking between Stirches Road and Stintyknowe.

The man assaulted the woman and then ran off, leaving the woman with arm and leg injuries.

Officers say the man was wearing a balaclava to hide his identity, as well as a dark hooded top, grey jogging trousers and black shoes.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

DC Dodds said: “This is a popular location and is used by many people taking exercise each day, so I am appealing to anyone who was in the area yesterday afternoon to think back and consider if they saw this man.

"Did you notice him prior to or after the assault? Any small piece of information could prove significant in our enquiries as we piece together the circumstances of what has happened and why.

"I would like to reassure members of the public that officers will be conducting additional patrols in the area.

"Anyone with concerns can approach these officers.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 2452 of Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
