SUPPORT for Scottish independence has risen markedly, according to a new poll.

A Panelbase poll for The Sunday Times found that 54 per cent backed the ‘yes’ side.

The result reflects a five-point rise in support for independence since the last such poll in March, alongside a five-point fall for the unionist side.

The poll of 1,026 voters in Scotland was conducted between Tuesday and Friday.

According to The Sunday Times, politics professor John Curtice believes First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has helped to boost the cause of independence.

He said: “Never before have the foundations of public support for the union looked so weak.

“Unsurprisingly, for many nationalists, the past three months have exemplified how Scotland could govern itself better as an independent, small country.

“More importantly, it may have persuaded some former unionists of that claim, too.”
