CRIMINAL gangs exploiting children are being targeted by Borders police in a crackdown on “county lines” offenders.

Officers recovered Class-A drugs after searching Eyemouth properties, according to a Facebook post published by the Scottish Borders Police page at 1.28pm on Friday, September 18.

In the Lothians and Borders on Wednesday (September 16), a person was arrested and £2,000 in cash was seized. Police also safeguarded 13 people during the “day of action” against known 'cuckooing' addresses.

Police Scotland’s assistant chief constable Angela McLaren said: "County line gangs groom and exploit the most vulnerable people in our communities including children and young people to store and sell drugs.

“They are intimated, coerced, threatened and often subject to violence."

Police Scotland describes ‘county lines’ as "drug dealers from large cities who expand their operations into smaller towns”, often targeting younger residents and exploiting their vulnerability – using them to sell drugs, carry cash and weapons.

These young people may have their homes taken over by the criminals. This is known as 'cuckooing'.

Ms McLaren added: "These gangs are not welcome in Scotland. Our officers remain absolutely committed to working with our partners in the Serious Organised Crime Taskforce to safeguard individuals who may be at risk and to pursue offenders.

“Together we will continue to make Scotland a hostile environment to those who seek to engage in criminal activity.

“The positive results during the day of action are an example of this work which will continue in support of the Serious and Organised Crime Strategy.

“As ever, I would urge anyone with concerns to report them to Police Scotland or alternatively to Crime stoppers anonymously.”

The day of county lines action across Scotland was part of collaborative efforts featuring officers from road policing, the dog unit and British Transport Police.

Thousands of pounds were seized, alongside large quantities of drugs – including heroin, cocaine and amphetamine. A samurai sword was among the weapons seized.
