SCOTLAND has recorded its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus cases with 714 new positive tests.
The figure accounts for 11.5% of newly tested individuals. Yesterday the figure was 9.5%, with 558 new cases.
According to the World Health Organisation, countries with a testing positivity rate of less than 5% generally have their epidemic under control.
The last time the rate was under 5% in Scotland was September 18.
Scottish Government data shows there are 99 people in hospital with coronavirus, an increase of 10 since yesterday.
The number of people in intensive care with coronavirus is 11 – unchanged from yesterday.
The data showed there were no deaths recorded over the last 24 hours.
Of the 714 new cases 290 are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, 113 are in Lothian and 91 are in Lanarkshire.
Reacting to the new cases, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “This is our biggest daily tally of cases so far. Important therefore to start with some caveats. We are doing much more testing now than in Spring. These figures are impacted by university clusters. And Test & Protect is working hard and well. However...
“We have absolutely no room for complacency - on the contrary. Cases are rising across Scotland, as in other countries. The number of people in hospital (99 today) has doubled in last couple of weeks. And we can only beat Covid back together - we must all play our part...
“So, please, for now, stay out of each other’s houses; stick to the 6/2 rule outdoors and in indoor public places; download http://protect.scot; and follow FACTS. We will get through this - but only if we all act to protect ourselves and each other. Let’s stick with it.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
