JOHN Lamont has expressed concern for Borders workers following the news that Edinburgh Woollen Mill (EWM) could go into administration.

Thousands of jobs are potentially at risk across the UK, including in Jedburgh – which has an EWM outlet store and café.

Mr Lamont, the MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, says it is disappointing to see the potential for further job losses in the Borders.

“This is very concerning news, and not just for Jedburgh,” Mr Lamont said.

The Tory member added: “Edinburgh Woollen Mill are a big employer right across the UK, as well as owning several other retail brands such as Ponden Home and Jaeger.

“I understand that the company has made contact with their staff this morning which I welcome.

“It is important that staff are always made aware of any information first.

“I sincerely hope that the administrators are not needed, but if they are, I will make sure that I make contact with them to ensure their employees are receiving the support they need.”

EWM has filed a notice to appoint administrators in order to find a potential buyer, according to Sky News.

The company, which owns Peacocks and Jaeger, employs 24,000 staff in the UK.

Employees were informed that national and local lockdowns had caused a negative impact on sales.
