NHS Borders has revealed the five venues across the region where coronavirus vaccinations will take place during the next wave of the roll-out.

The second wave of the vaccination programme is under way, with the health board aiming to have vaccinated everyone eligible in the current wave by February 15.

The third wave “will commence mid-February and will run to early May”, says NHS Borders – which will offer the coronavirus vaccines at five community venues.

Those venues are: Queen’s Leisure Centre (Galashiels); Gytes Leisure Centre (Peebles); Hawick Town Hall (Hawick); Eyemouth Community Centre (Eyemouth); and Springwood Park (Kelso).

According to NHS Borders, the venues have been selected “based on population size and demographic to ensure that those eligible are able to access their appointment”.

People aged 50 and over in the region will be eligible in the third wave, with some teenagers also able to get their first jags.

According to NHS Borders, those eligible in the wave will be:

  • all individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality
  • unpaid carers, including all adult carers and young carers aged 16 to 18
  • all those 60 years of age and over
  • all those 55 years of age and over
  • all those 50 years of age and over

A spokesperson for NHS Borders said: “Appointments for Wave 3 will be allocated and sent to those eligible by letter. Further details will follow in due course.”

In a press release issued today (February 9), the region’s health board says that more than 23,000 people in the Borders have received their first jab of a COVID vaccine.

The spokesperson added: “In line with the national rollout plan in Scotland, Wave 2 commenced on February 1.

“Our teams are aiming to offer the vaccination to the 24,000 people who are eligible in Wave 2 by February 15.”

NHS Borders are urging those eligible for a jag in the current wave not to contact their GP practice or the booking hub, unless advised to do so.

Those eligible will be contacted to book their appointment.
