Harry and Meghan will not return as working members of the Royal Family - and  hundreds of readers said they should now be stripped of their Sussex titles.

The Queen confirmed the couple would not "continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service".

A statement from the palace added Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, "remain much loved members of the family".

The couple said "service is universal" and offered to continue supporting the organisations they have represented.

The duke and duchess said last January they would step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

The couple, who now live in California, formally stepped down in March, with a plan to review the arrangements after 12 months.

The confirmation means Prince Harry and Meghan will return their honorary military appointments and royal patronages, which will be redistributed to working members of the Royal Family.

Under the arrangement agreed last year, the couple gave up using the HRH titles.

But Harry retains the title of prince, having been born one.

The couple have kept their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles since leaving the UK but in recent months they have opted to simply introduce themselves by their first names.

We asked you if the couple should keep their Sussex titles.

These were some of the repsonses:

Sally Westbrook: "They will most definitely not be missed. They give nothing. But expect everything."

Lance Rooney: "They should absolutely be stripped of their titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They are no longer working royals and can't have it both ways.

"Glad to be rid of both of them and, if I had my way, the rest would follow. There is no place for a monarchy in 21st century Britain."

Mark Farley: "They have never represented Sussex. Coming here once doesn't count. She couldn't even point it out on a map and nobody here (in Sussex) wants them. Sorry."

Martin Ryan: "Sadly, they won’t give the title up as it’s too much of an earner for them."

Juleyganne: "Be better to have a voted for community hero representing our county. Someone who we can all be proud of!"

Rob Reaks: "I’d prefer the title went to someone who could participate and contribute to the area. But sadly I can’t imagine we’ll have another active 'Sussex' for a long long time."

Nicola Jane Steedman: "They are an insult to Sussex."

Leonie Cornwall: "Demote them to Duke and Duchess of Crawley."

Melee: "They would have given them up voluntarily if they had the slightest shred of integrity. They have done everything they can to spite the RF yet they want to hang on to the titles. What a joke they are."

The couple's departure follows conversations between Harry and members of the Royal Family.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

"While all are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family."

A spokesman for Harry and Meghan said: "As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role."

They added: "We can all live a life of service. Service is universal."
