THE Borders moving down to Level 3 of coronavirus lockdown restrictions from Monday (April 26) is “really positive news”, says a director at the region’s health board.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced on Tuesday (April 20) that all mainland areas of Scotland will move down from Level 4 to Level 3 of lockdown rules next week.

This will bring about the most significant changes the country has seen since going into lockdown on Boxing Day.

NHS Borders’ director of public health, Dr Tim Patterson, said: “Further easing of restrictions is really positive news, and has been made possible by people continuing to follow the rules which helps keep the rate of infection down and incidence of the virus low.

"To help us keep on the right path, please remain patient. Stick with the rules and continue protecting each other and our local health and social care services.

“Following the FACTS advice is really important, even if you have received one or both doses of the COVID-19 vaccination.”

The changes from Monday include the reopening of the hospitality sector, as well as non-essential travel to the rest of the UK being permitted.

Six people from two households will also be allowed to socialise indoors in a public place, while gyms and swimming pools will open for individual exercise.
