THE leader of Scottish Borders Council has issued a message to people in the region ahead of a move to Level 2 of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Earlier this week, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that the Borders would move down from Level 3 of lockdown rules from Monday (May 17) – along with the majority of Scotland.

The changes will include six people from three households being allowed to meet inside and stay overnight, with no need to socially distance in private homes.

Responding to the First Minister’s announcement, council leader Shona Haslam, of the Conservatives, said: “The further easing of restrictions is welcome news for people in the Borders, who’ve patiently followed all the guidance in place to keep everyone safe.

“It is also good news for our local hospitality and tourism businesses who I’m sure will see even more people coming through their doors in the weeks to come.

“I’d encourage everyone to continue doing what they’ve done so well – follow all the guidance in place and act responsibly.

“If we all do this we will be able to ease restrictions even further and enjoy more freedom going forward.”

From May 17, eight people from eight households will be able to meet outdoors, with pubs and restaurants permitted to sell alcohol indoors.

NHS Borders’ director of public health, Tim Patterson, said the further easing of lockdown restrictions is “really positive news”.

“Being able to see our loved ones in a private home is a big step in the right direction and I’m sure that will bring great comfort to Borderers,” Dr Patterson said.

“It is however really important that you remain cautious and take the necessary precautions such as opening windows to keep rooms well ventilated, avoid touching hard surfaces and maintaining good hand and cough hygiene to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

“It also remains important that you practice social distancing in public places and gardens.

"To help us keep on the right path, stick with the rules and continue protecting each other and our local health and social care services.

“Following the FACTS advice is really important, even if you have received one or both doses of the COVID-19 vaccination.”
