STEVEN Davis, the Rangers midfielder who has been named the 2021 Scottish Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, has admitted he was humbled to be singled out as one of Walter Smith’s most satisfying signings.

Northern Ireland internationalist Davis first moved to his boyhood heroes on loan from Fulham halfway through the 2007/08 season during the Scot’s second spell as manager and played as the Ibrox club reached the UEFA Cup final.

He signed for the Glasgow giants permanently that summer and then helped them to win three consecutive Scottish titles before Smith stood down as manager and retired from football in 2011.

The 36-year-old, who became the most capped player in the history of British football in March when he made his 126th appearance for his national team against Bulgaria, confessed he was touched to have been lavished with praise by Smith earlier this year.

Glasgow Times:

“I hold Walter in the highest regard for everything he did for me in my career,” he said. “I had a great relationship with him and he is an absolute legend of the game.

“Straight away when I came into the club you realised the stature of the man. He has said nice things about me and I am very honoured and humbled by that. “

Asked about being named SFWA Footballer of the Year, Davis said: “I’m absolutely delighted as it wasn't something I was ever thinking about.  At the start of the season you just want to try and make an impact and try to do your best.

“It is all about trying to be successful and the season has gone so well for me. It is great to be recognised in terms of your efforts.”
