A NURSERY in Glasgow is under investigation after a child escaped from the premises earlier this week.

A probe has been launched by the care watchdog into the incident, which took place at Sandaig Nursery in Garrowhill on Tuesday afternoon.

The toddler was soon traced safe and well shortly after the alarm was raised.

A source raised concerns with the Glasgow Times that the nursery had been short-staffed at the time of the matter.

Council bosses have, however, reassured that the facility had the correct staffing ratio to children.

The local authority has since apologised to the child's family for the distress caused.

A spokeswoman said: “We would like to apologise to the family for the distress that this incident has caused and everyone is very relieved that the child was quickly found safe and well as soon as the alarm was raised.

“An external investigation is being carried out with the help of our health and safety officers and the care inspectorate and police informed as is the correct procedure in these cases.

“Nursery staff have offered any support to the family that they need and an updated risk assessment is being carried out to see if there is any additional measures that can be put in place.

“The safety of our children is of paramount importance in all of our schools and nurseries and we will act on any recommendations that are made from the investigation into this incident.”
