Derelict land in Glasgow’s Southside could be transformed into a residential area as plans to develop thousands of new affordable homes across the city progress.

Glasgow City Council is expected to complete the sale of the land at Kennisholm Avenue later today (Thursday, August 5) to Glen Oaks Housing Association, based in Thornliebank, who are planning to develop almost 50 new properties at the site.  Glasgow City Council has already approved proposals for a total of 47 homes to be built between Kennisholm Avenue and the railway line.

In May planning bosses agreed there will be a mixture of cottage flats, terraced and semi-detached houses.

A fresh report is being presented to members of the contracts and property committee on Thursday which highlights Glasgow’s housing needs and its growing and diverse population.  By approving the sale, the city council aims to support registered social landlords and the private sector to provide a total of 15,000 new homes across the city.  The sale will help the local authority meet their target.

Glen Oaks Housing Association Limited is already the owner of the adjoining land and they are looking to develop both sites for social rented residential housing.

Glasgow has a city development plan which was adopted in March 2017 and sets out the council’s land use strategy providing the basis for assessing planning applications.  The committee will be expected to note the content of the report and decide if the proposals meet the city development plan.

They will then instruct the managing director of City Property to negotiate terms and conditions of the disposal and decide how much the land is worth.

A decision will be made public later in the week.
