Simon Ritchie, 32, from Peebles, who was one of the campaigners behind the demand for greater services, wrote on social media: “Thank you to everyone (several hundred) who got onboard with the petition, the letter writing, the phoning and the emails.

“There is no doubt in my mind we wouldn’t be getting these timetable improvements were it not for our efforts.

“And some said it was a waste of time!”

The service changes will also apply to journeys taken on a Sunday, with the last bus leaving Galashiels at 7.30pm (arriving at 9.28pm) and the final service to leave Edinburgh will depart at 10pm, returning to Galashiels at 11.58pm.

A spokesperson for Borders Buses said: “Over the past 16 months, we have continuously adapted our services to meet the current demand.

“We’ve frequently reached out to customers to better understand travel requirements and have welcomed all feedback.

“Based on this we are pleased to announce from Friday, August 6 we shall introduce additional evening journeys on the X62 route.

“The increase is to meet an expected demand as more people travel to Edinburgh for the Fringe and other leisure activities.

“As restrictions are further eased, we shall continue to monitor all services with the aim of increasing journeys across our network.

“To better understand how you currently are travelling or would wish to travel in the near future, we once again ask you to complete our customer survey.”
