SOUTHERN KNIGHTS' winger Paddy Anderson and second row Daniel Suddon have been selected for the Edinburgh Rugby Pro team squad for the game against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday.

The game marks the opening of the Edinburgh Rugby Stadium and sees fans return to watch the club in full numbers for the first time since February 2020.

Southern Knights Head Coach Rob Chrystie was delighted to hear the news and believes that the youngsters' hard work has paid dividends.

He told Borders Rugby TV: “It’s a great opportunity for both of them. Mike Blair (Edinburgh Rugby coach) gave me a quick call and asked how are these boys doing, and they have been excellent. They have worked really hard to get there and they have been performing on the pitch and they (Edinburgh) have obviously picked up on that.

It’s great, it just shows that if you work hard and fully buy into it they get opportunities and that’s what this competition is about.

“Obviously we all want to win everything but it just shows that there are opportunities for them and especially young players in this area.”

Chrystie also revealed that the duo’s team-mates are delighted and that their selection demonstrates to other players that the opportunity to progress to the professional ranks exist.

He added: “The boys are absolutely chuffed to bits for them. We have players who have aspirations to improve and hopefully if they are good enough and stay fit they can progress and that’s what this is all about. It’s good that we can see that happening.

“It’s a big game for them to be involved in. It’s the opening of the Edinburgh ground which looks a fabulous stadium and it will be a good game against Newcastle.”

The ‘homecoming’ match-up will see Edinburgh’s Mike Blair take charge of the capital side for the first time since being appointed Head Coach in July.

Blair added: “It’s really important for us to track players in the Super 6. That’s a real stepping stone for us, watching these guys. They are putting it in. They are being coached really well and ultimately those are the guys we want to bring up to our level. I’m really looking forward to watching them playing.”
