'CRAFTIVISTS' in Peebles will come together this weekend to display 60 metres of their creations as part of a campaign for COP26 in November.

The Stitches For Survival campaign has asked those who can sew, knit, crotchet and felt to put their talents to a good cause by designing panels for a 1.5 mile-long banner to be displayed at the environmental conference in Glasgow.

And crafters in and around Peebles have joined the effort, designing their own panels featuring environmental images and slogans.

Catriona Hamilton, one of the organisers of the Peebles effort, said: "I have several panels by local 'craftivists' which will be the last panels to be sewn together with the others, I think it must be nearing 60 panels now (that's 60 meters long), then it's off to be delivered to Glasgow via an electric vehicle a couple of days later where it will be sewn up with many many more pieces by volunteers to create a 1.5 mile-long giant scarf to send a powerful heartfelt message to those attending COP26 that the climate emergency cannot wait we need deeds not words now."

The Stitches For Survival campaign chose to create a 1.5 mile banner in recognition of the 1.5°C target set out in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Following the COP26 conference (held from November 1-12) some panels will be kept by Stitches For Survival for future campaigns and an exhibition, whereas others will be repurposed into blankets for refugees.

The 60 panels will be on display on Tweed Green tomorrow (Saturday, September 25) between 10am and 1pm.
