GAIA Duo, Chamber Music Scotland's Ensemble in Residence 2019-21, end their Scottish tour at the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles on Tuesday 16th November at 7.30pm, presented by Music in Peebles.

Katrina Lee, a violinist from Yorkshire and Alice Allen, a cellist from Banchory, formed their musical duo partnership 4 years ago, and have consolidated it during their two years with Chamber Music Scotland, working with artists and composers to forge new works, and to research Scottish female composers hitherto unknown, to bring their music to light.

Their programme showcases composers spanning 200 years including Catherine White Sonata (1804), Ignatius Sancho Selection of Dances, Rebecca Clarke Lullaby and Grotesque, Elizabeth Maconchy Theme and Variations plus works by Sally Beamish and Duncan Strachan commissioned for GAIA.

Catherine White’s Sonata was published in Edinburgh as part of a collection by “A Young Lady”. Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) British-American, was a virtuoso viola player whose compositions were judged, at the time, “too beautiful to have been written by a woman”, and she felt too discouraged to write more.

Elizabeth Maconchy, (1907-94) British-Irish, is considered to be one of Britain’s finest 20th century composers with a prolific output, but, as usual, not so well-known yet. Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship in 1729 and had a remarkable life.

Katrina and Alice are changing the music scene already with their fresh ideas and innovative projects. Both are multi-award winning musicians, are members of several ensembles, and have commissioned several new exciting pieces from Scottish young composers.
