ORGANISERS of this year’s Peebles and District Round Table fireworks display say they welcomed their largest crowd on Saturday (November 6).

And they have raised thousands of pounds for local charities.

The annual bonfire and fireworks display at Victoria Park last weekend was “really successful” according to Round Table chairman David Aikman.

He said: “It was a really successful event.

“And from the looks of things we had a larger crowd than we ever had before. Feedback we have had on Facebook has been phenomenal.”

Thanks to the sponsorship of Stobo Castle Health Spa, all donations collected at the display will go directly to the Peeblesshire Youth Trust and Peeblesshire Foodbank, namely the trust’s Christmas hamper campaign.

Although the total is still to be confirmed, Mr Aikman told the Peeblesshire News: “We will have raised in excess of £7,000 – the highest we’ve ever raised. And we’re thrilled by that.”

Elsewhere in Peeblesshire the Whipman Play Society in West Linton organised a fireworks display for Friday (November 5) as did the Rotary Club of Innerleithen Walkerburn and Traquair.

Also on Friday crowds gathered for displays in Denholm and in Kelso.

Mr Aikman added: “I just want to thank the community and everyone that turned out and did their bit. We can’t do our work without the support of the people of Peebles.”

The Round Table are now looking to Christmas and the return of Santa’s Sleigh. For more information, visit the Peebles and District Round Table Facebook page.
