DODDIE Weir will be joining the Duke of Buccleuch as Honorary President of Melrose Rugby.
The announcement was made at last night’s Annual General Meeting of club members.
On hearing the news, Doddie made a video statement expressing his delight which was shared on social media.
He said: “Hello to everyone at Melrose Rugby Club. I’m so sad that I can’t be with you at tonight’s AGM. I am delighted to become joint Honorary President.
“Thanks so much to all involved. I had some amazing times whilst playing at Melrose. I am so excited to be reliving those playing times with my boys now.
“I enjoy coming down to the club. It’s the best place to be. Thanks again and see you all soon. Take care.”
A statement on the club’s website said: The Duke of Buccleuch and Doddie are both delighted with the news and look forward to serving as Honorary Presidents together.”
The pair have a long connection as Doddie was a member of the Duke of Buccleuch Pony Club and previously competed at Thirlestane Horse Trials.
