A BORDERS motorist who clocked up his second drink-driving offence has been banned from the road for 12 months.

Fifty-six-year-old Allan Knox, of Hawick, pleaded guilty to being in charge of a vehicle while more than two and a half times the legal alcohol limit on September 21 last year.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard that at about 3pm he left the family home in Twirlees Terrace and was reported to the police by his wife because he had gone to buy alcohol.

Depute fiscal Joanne Waller said: "Police traced the vehicle at 4.15pm. They approached the vehicle and found him in the driver's seat.

"They spoke to the accused and he said he had consumed two cans of lager.

"They allowed 20 minutes to pass before he was breathalysed and was positive. He was cautioned and arrested and taken to Hawick Police Station."

Know had a breath/alcohol reading of 58 microgrammes – the legal limit being 22.

Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said: "He had been in an argument with his wife. She suspected he had gone to buy alcohol which he did. He has a long-standing problem and because of stresses and strains he lapsed into that kind of behaviour."

The court was told Knox had separated from his wife after 17 years of marriage but was tackling his alcohol problem.

In addition to the disqualification period, Knox was fined £225 with a £20 Victim Surcharge imposed.
