THE FIRST of two separate Dubai Sevens tournaments played on consecutive weekends in late November and early December took place last weekend with Borderers featuring in both the men and women’s GB sides.

Team GB women finished in fifth place with Lisa Thomson featuring in four of the five matches.

She came on as a substitute in the victories over Russia (12-7) and Ireland (26-15) and started in the victory over Canada (24-7) and the defeat to Fiji (5-28) but did remained on the bench in the victory over Brazil (22-21) in the fifth place final.

Former Melrose player Ross McCann started all the group games beating Japan (17-12) Ireland (26-19) before losing to South Africa (12-31).

He also managed to score tries against Ireland and South Africa.

Team GB then beat Kenya (33-5) in the 5th/8th place play off semi-final before losing to Australia (35-21) to finish the tournament in sixth place.

Both players will be in action again this weekend in the second tournament.

On Saturday the women play France (kick off 5am) then Fiji (kick off 12.14). On Sunday they face Ireland (kick off 5am) and USA (kick off 08.07) The remainder of the tournament will take place that day.

On Saturday the men play Ireland (kick off 6.50am), Japan (kick off 10.42) and South Africa (kick off 16.33). That tournament concludes on Sunday.
