A PEEBLES group is saving timber from landfill as part of a fundraising campaign to help people fleeing conflict in Ukraine.

Bonnie Peebles Plus has regularly sold salvaged timber to raise funds for its own planting.

However, for a limited time the group is now turning its efforts to support the Red Cross.

The national charity is raising money to support refugees leaving Ukraine.

John Falla, the chairman of Bonnie Peebles Plus said: “It’s so disturbing to look at the images [of Ukraine] on television.

“It’s impossible to think of going through that and we must get help to them.”

He added: “In the last two weeks since we started the Ukraine appeal we have raised over £600.

“I would like to mention how Forbes Chisholm and Jim Cowe are very helpful in going to Gorbridge to help pick it [timber] up. We thank them.”

Mr Falla explained that soon the group’s attentions will turn to planting in the town’s gardens, so they will be making one last trip to collect timber.

The timber will be sold from the Beltane Hut at the Gytes Centre, with all the money going to the Red Cross.

Bonnie Peebles Plus has previously turned the salvaged timber into planters or raised beds for the community, local allotments or they have been sold for funds.

And all funds already raised by the group before the appeal will be spent on plants for the town.

The timber measures at 3.5 inches by 1.5 inches and 2.4 metres long and is sold at £3 a length. There is also timber available which is two inch by two inch which is sold at £2 a length.

Mr Falla said: “You get a bargain, you save timber from the skip, but most of all you help the people of Ukraine.”
