A PEEBLESSHIRE park is in line to get a memorial to a popular event.

Peebles Highland Games is approaching its 50th anniversary.

And the town’s common good fund sub-committee – chaired by Tweeddale East councillor Robin Tatler – agreed in principle to a memorial stone in Hay Lodge Park to celebrate the event.

A Peebles Highland Games spokesperson said: “It all started back in 1972 when the Peeblesshire Tourist Association held the first local Pipe Band Contest.

“Over the years, highland dancing, heavy events, haggis hurling, art & crafts stalls, trade stalls, fun fair and much more have been added to give us today’s Peebles Highland Games.”

The games, held on the first Saturday in September each year, will take place on September 3.
