EARLSTON High School held a hugely successful S2 Future Pathway Event #NoWrongPath recently.

More than 30 employers visited the school for the event which was formally opened by Keynote speaker Glenn Campbell.

Campbell gave an informative lecture entitled ‘Leadership and how to get there’ which detailed his career pathway from school to political editor at BBC Scotland.

This included dropping out of university before getting a job at Radio Clyde due to ‘polite persistence’ and refusing to take no for an answer.

Campbell then answered questions from chosen S2 students Lucy Whiting, Marcelina Lipok, Charlie Scaife, Tahlia Collins, Oscar Bow, and members of the audience on the skills needed in his current role, what he loves about his job and what made him want to become a journalist.

The pupils then split into groups and interviewed guests at the employer stations on their own pathways, what skills and qualifications they needed for their job and why would they recommend their job.

The students were then interviewed by the guests about their strengths, leadership and responsibility experience, hobbies and interests and why they should be employed.

Pupils were then given the opportunity to break away from their groups and speak to any employer they were specifically interested in.

The event was considered to be a huge success and Deputy Head Damian Hayes said: We were delighted with the success of our first pathways event in three years. Ours S2s were a credit to themselves and the school.

“They interviewed businesses and were interviewed in their turn to help them learn more about pathways into the world of work.

“There were also lots of challenging questions for our keynote speaker Glenn Campbell, BBC Scotland’s political editor. It was a great start to our week of activities for S1-3 students.
