AS the summer comes to an end, Greener Peebles has been looking back on a season full of exciting activities.
In June the community garden welcomed performers and visitors to mark the Summer Solstice.
The celebration featured dancing, drumming and storytelling around nature and Scottish heritage.
Following the June event, Helen Copley from Greener Peebles said: “Despite a bit of drizzle, there was definitely a sunny, joyful spirit at our summer solstice event!
“We were very fortunate to receive Year of Stories #YS2022 funding for this event.
“A huge thank you to all of our brilliant performers, who all had a creative story to share.
“The local Dance for Parkinson’s Scotland group got us moving; Where’s The One drumming circle had us grooving; Dougie Mackay Storyteller fired our imaginations; and Jusztina from Delighters wowed us with her circus skills.
“Thank you so much also to our fantastic volunteer helpers who supported by taking photos, marshalling and providing refreshments – and to Tweeddale Youth Action Food Punks for the delicious soup (using some lovage from the garden), bread and cake.”
Greener Peebles has also recently launched a new website following its change of name.
The website and the group’s Facebook page, share all of its events, activities and volunteering opportunities.
Activities hosted by the group include:
Two weekly Volunteer Sessions at the community garden – Tuesday and Friday mornings 10am-12pm
Weekly “Grow Kids” toddler group, and weekly “Grow Babies” family group for under 1’s
Variety of skill shares every month; including wellbeing topics, herbal knowledge and seed collecting.
Pick Your Own – harvest days
There will also be a ‘Seed Tour’ event on September 30 – a screening of grassroots climate action short films from a solar powered campervan, hosted in partnership with Alchemy Arts and Film.
During the summer break the garden has continued to be misused, damaged and vandalised regularly.
Organisers at Greener Peebles continue to work with local partners and the police to tackle this issue and ask that if anyone has information on any anti-social behaviour to call 101 and quote incident number 2170.
