SCOTTISH Rugby has suspended all domestic competitive matches this weekend as a “mark of respect” following the Queen’s death.

A statement was made last night (September 8), with further information to be shared “in due course”.

The governing body for rugby union in Scotland said it was “deeply saddened” to hear of the passing of the UK’s longest serving monarch.

A statement read: "As a mark of respect, and to acknowledge the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Scottish Rugby has decided to suspend all domestic competitive matches this weekend.

"This decision also includes Scotland's Summer Test v Spain on Sunday and the Famous Grouse Summer Pre-Season Challenge between Glasgow Warriors and Ulster on Friday evening.

"A decision on Edinburgh Rugby's game in Italy against Treviso, also on Friday Evening, will be made once further Government guidance is known."

Following the announcement, a Gala Rugby spokesperson said: “As a mark of respect, and to acknowledge the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Scottish Rugby has decided to suspend all domestic competitive matches this weekend.

“This means Gala will not be travelling to Millbrae to face Ayr. Lasswade will not be visiting Netherdale to face our 2XV, and finally Gala Wanderers U18s will not travel to Tynedale.

“The club are deeply saddened with the news of the death of Her Majesty, The Queen, and our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time.

“The club will provide further information on the rescheduled fixtures, and next week’s fixtures as soon as the information is available.”

A Peebles RFC spokesperson said: “As well as all senior domestic matches being postponed this weekend, all junior and school matches have been suspended.

“This also includes our Piranhas tournament that was due to be held on Sunday. This will hopefully be rescheduled.

“The club would like to thank the organisers for their efforts thus far.”
