GALA boxing club boxer Jack Grieve won the Male Elite 75kg title at the Celtic Box Cup tournament last Sunday September 25 2022.

The three-day event which is held annually at the Dungarvan Boxing Club in County Wexford is considered to be Ireland's Premier International boxing tournament and this year attracted 295 fighters.

The Langlee fighter claimed the title by unanimous decision following an impressive display with his opponent Diogo Semedo of the Privilégio BC in Portugal receiving two standing counts in the bout.

Back home, a delighted Grieve summed up the experience. He said: “I’m still buzzing and still quite chuffed. Winning was definitely the highlight of my boxing career so far.

“My opponent was from Portugal and this was the fourth time he had fought at the event so he was older and had more experience so it’s a good scalp for me.

“He took a standing count in the second round and I knocked him down in the third.

“The whole weekend was a really good experience for me as I had never fought overseas before and the tournament is the second biggest Box Cup event in Europe.

“I can’t thank the coaches Jim Doris and Jim Dow and all the others at the club enough and wouldn’t be where Iam without there help.

“My next aim is to make the Scotland Boxing Squad and hopefully winning this title will help.”

Gala Boxing Club chairman Russell Hamilton said “Absolutely buzzing for Jack. Well done to all the lads, you continue to make the club proud. Also thanks to the coaches for your commitment in helping them get ready for the box cup”

Other Gala boxers Jack Swaney and Jack Noble also travelled but were unlucky with their quarter-final bouts.

Swaney lost to Wexford County’s David Kennedy in the Senior A 80kg category and Noble lost to Dublin City University’s Robert Maddy in the Senior B 80kg category.
