A BORDERS federation SWI has received £2,000 of funding for its show this month thanks to a local environmental group.

The Roxburghshire Federation of Scottish Women's Institutes (SWI) was awarded the £2,000 grant by the Fallago Environment Fund.

The money has been used to finance the federation's show at Springwood Park, Kelso, on October 23.

Roxburghshire Federation SWI Show convenor Kirsty Robb said: “This will be our first Show since the pandemic and the support from the Fallago Environment Fund is helping us ensure that we’re able to put on an incredible display of our members’ work."

She added: "From delicious kitchen creations to gorgeous hand-crafted displays including depictions of scenes from the poems or novels of Scottish writers, we will be showcasing some impressive work.

"Our children’s competitions and our new children’s craft sessions are also designed to encourage young people to try some of the activities that our members enjoy so much and perhaps become involved with the organization in the future.

"We’re greatly looking forward to the event and hope that members of the public will also come along to enjoy the day.”

The show takes place every two years and features displays of crafts, homebaking, flower arranging and photography.

Federations taking part in this year's show at the Borders Event Centre include: Appletreehall, Bedrule, Bowden, Broomlands, Cogsmill, Heiton, Langshaw, Makerstoun, Midlem, Minto & Denholm, Morebattle, Newcastleton, Newmill & Teviothead, Newtown St Boswells, Southdean, St Boswells, Stitchill, Towford, and Wilton Dean.

The Fallago Environment Fund ensures that the benefits of the Fallago Rig Wind Farm in the Lammermuir Hills are shared with projects and organisations across the Borders.

Gareth Baird, who is chairman of the Fallago Environment Fund Chairman, said: “The Roxburghshire Federation’s network of Scottish Women’s Institutes plays a significant role in preserving and developing an important part of Scotland’s heritage and culture.

"Its contribution to social interaction and reducing isolation in rural communities can also not be overestimated.

"We’re delighted that the Fallago Environment Fund is able to use these windfarm-generated funds to support this important part of the fabric of Borders rural life.”
