INNERLEITHEN is getting a little taste of 'hygge' this winter as a new business has opened its doors in the town.

Haus and Co., an independent lifestyle and coffee shop, has brought the Scandinavian concept of hygge (pronounced 'hoo-ga') – a feeling of cosiness and contentment – to the Borders.

Selling Scandi-inspired homewares, Haus and Co also offers plenty of space to experience hygge for yourself, sat in a comfy corner with a hot coffee.

Haus and Co's creative directors, Gary Smith and Gary Carr, hope the shop can be a "welcoming oasis" from daily life.

Mr Smith said: "I’ve been interested in interiors for as long as I can remember.

"I love Scandinavian design, the laid-back lifestyle and the coffee culture.

"Lifestyle stores are not hard to find in cities like London or Melbourne or Copenhagen.

"Quite simply I wanted the same for Innerleithen having relocated here earlier this year from Edinburgh.

"My inspiration was to establish the kind of ‘destination’ store that I seek out when travelling, an inspiring place where coffee and design sit side by side.

"It's a space where you feel as at home enjoying a great flat white and some cake while flicking through a magazine as you do seeking out that unique gift for a friend."

In addition to Scandinavian brands, Haus and Co will also house products from local makers and creatives.

Mr Carr added: "Innerleithen was a no brainier when we made the decision to open Haus and Co.

"The landscape is breathtaking, the local community spirit amazing and the transformation seen on the high street over the last couple of years made it an obvious choice for us.

"It’s such a creative place too.

"We have lots of plans to use the store as a creative hub, running workshops, craft classes and a book club."
