A BORDERS music group is celebrating 15 years of teaching with a number of winter events.

Merlin Music Academy is based in Melrose and works with people of all ages.

A spokesperson for the academy said: “We have seen so many wonderful people come through the doors of Merlin from young children to retired adults that have come back to music after many years.

“Over 2,500 faces have come through our doors and we have had the joy and honour of supporting them all on their musical journey.”

As part of its anniversary celebrations the group has held an open stage night for students and a quiz night.

And there’s more to come.

This weekend, singer-songwriter Kathy Kennedy will host her Harmony Group, a two-hour group singing session on Saturday (November 26) from 10am-12pm.

Then on Saturday, December 3 Merlin students will have their Christmas concert in the Merlin band room at Palma Place, Melrose from 11am to 3pm.

The series of mini concerts will highlight the amazing talent that Merlin supports, and friends and family are all invited to attend.

The running order of the concert is:

  • 11am-12pm – Singers, Drummers – Kathy & Frazer’s Christmas Concert
  • 12.30-1.30pm Guitarists & more. Andy & Lewis Christmas Concert
  • 2-3pm – Fiddlers, Woodwind, Piano – Linzi & Lucy’s Christmas Concert

The final event on Merlin’s calendar is another student Christmas concert in North Berwick, on December 9 at The Lighthouse.

From 6-8pm students will take part in one concert, with the opportunity to perform original pieces in a “very safe, supportive and friendly environment in front of family and friends”.

During its 15 years, Merlin has helped to support local and national charities through events and concerts.

The spokesperson added: “Over the years we have raised an astonishing £10.5k for various Charities through holding wonderful Concerts and of course the amazing support from each and every one of you for these events.

“Merlin has often been copied but never bettered and we cannot thank you enough for allowing us to become 15 years old through your continued support of us and all of our amazing tutors and throughout some very interesting times in deed including of course a pandemic.”
