A BORDERS man who admitted a drink-driving offence at Jedburgh Sheriff Court has been banned from the road for 20 months.

Sixty-year-old Robert Corcoran pleaded guilty to driving with a blood/alcohol count of 109 millilitres – the legal limit being 50 – on the A68 near Jedburgh last month.

The court was told the accused was travelling south about 1.20pm when he tried to negotiate a left hand bend and his nearside wheel struck the kerb and resulted in his car colliding with a trailer being pulled by a tractor.

His vehicle turned 180 degrees and he was unable to get out and had to be extracted by firefighters and taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he was treated for a pelvic fracture.

When in hospital police managed to get a blood sample which proved he had been drink driving.

Defence lawyer Liam Alexander said: “He had been at a party the night before the incident and had been drinking fairly heavily.

“He had been heading to feed birds of prey owned by one of his friends and misjudged the bend and hit the kerb and spun and hit another vehicle.

“He says his time of driving is now up.”

The former car manufacturer accepted he had a problem with alcohol.

Sheriff Peter Paterson imposed a period of disqualification of 20 months – reduced from 30 months due to the guilty plea – and a fine of £300.

A £20 victim surcharge was added.
