STRONG winds are set to hit the Borders at the end of this week.

Starting on Friday (February 17) from 5am to 6pm, the strong winds come with a slight risk of injury and possible delays and cancellations to public transport.

Two warnings from the Met Office will be in place on Friday.

One which covers Peebles, Galashiels, Selkirk, and Melrose, will be in place from 5am-3pm. The second, which covers Kelso, Jedburgh, and Duns, will be in place from 6am-6pm.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "A period of very strong winds may develop through Friday morning, before slowly easing into Friday evening.

"Winds will be strongest over, and immediately to the east of high ground, with gusts of 50-60 mph.

"Gusts as high as 70 mph are possible, particularly for some of the more exposed trans-Pennine routes. High-sided vehicles may be particularly impacted.

"Winds will increase from west to east, with gusts of 55-65 mph likely, and locally as high as 70-75 mph for exposed coasts and hills.

"Winds will gradually through Friday afternoon and evening."

Both warnings have a low likelihood and medium impact according to the Met Office's warning impact matrix.
