ROTARY Foundation members in Peeblesshire have raised money to buy a shelter box to help people in Turkey and Syria following a devastating earthquake.

A bucket collection was held at the Co-op in Innerleithen.

And more than £400 was raised in just four hours.

Member Denis Robson said: “We raised £420 within four hours with a bucket collection at the Innerleithen Co-op and topped this up to £600 to purchase a shelter box.

“The box contains a tent suitable for a family of four or six people. It provides immediate shelter as there are people sleeping outdoors or in cars and the weather is freezing.

“The boxes are winterised and adjusted for the conditions. They include cooking pots, a stove and a container for water.

“On behalf of the Rotary club of Innerleithen, Walkerburn and Traquair I would like to thank everyone who generously donated to our collection and also the Innerleithen Co-op for their co-operation. To raise so much money in such a short period of time was amazing.”

Peebles Rotary Club members hope to hold another collection in Peebles High Street today (Saturday February 18)
