BORDERER John Jeffrey is set to become the vice chair of World Rugby.

The 64-year-old, of Kelso, has been nominated for the vacant position at the international federation.

World Rugby's member unions were invited to submit nominations for the position by the closing date of April 11, with candidates required to be a current member of the World Rugby Council at the time of their nomination.

Scottish Rugby Limited chair Jeffrey was proposed and nominated by the Scottish Rugby Union and seconded by South Africa Rugby Union, with no other nominations received.

As the only candidate nominated, Jeffrey is deemed elected as vice chair of World Rugby subject to ratification by the council at its annual meeting on May 11.

He will replace Bernard Laporte as chairman Bill Beaumont’s number two.

The Borderer won 40 Scotland caps between 1984 and 1990 and toured Australia with the British and Irish Lions in 1989.

At the end of 2020 Jeffrey was appointed as chairman of the Scottish Rugby Board.

Last December Scottish Rugby announced that Jeffrey would stand down in May but would remain on the board.
