A MAIN Borders road will be closed for nine nights to make way for resurfacing works next month.

Two kilometres of the A7 between Hawick and Canonbie will close for the roadworks between 7.30pm and 6am each day.

From Tuesday, May 2 to Friday, May 5 the A7 from Braehead to Linhope will close with diversions in place using the A6088, B6357 and B7201 towards Canonbie.

Then from Monday, May 15-Friday, May 19 the A7 at Branxholm will close overnight with motorist diverted from the A7 at Hawick and using the same diversion routes as the earlier roadworks.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East network manager, said: “The surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on these sections of the A7 and will greatly enhance the driving experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during these works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding.

"We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”

The diversions add approximately 7.7 mile and 20 minutes to journeys.

Emergency vehicles will be given access for the duration of the works and local access for residents will be permitted at points it is safe to pass through the works.
