CORONATION events kicked off in the Borders yesterday with a celebratory lunch at Earlston Rugby Club.

The Earlston Lunch Club hosted the event with tea, sandwiches, scones and sherry and a coronation cake.

And prior to starting, the hall resounded with a chorus of ‘God Save the King’ followed by three cheers for His Majesty.

The club meet every two weeks and as well as enjoying lunches, members go on bus trips and enjoy concerts.

Helen Reid told The Border Telegraph: “I help organise the lunches along with Harry Cummings and Jean Walker.

“We have been running for six years and have 28-members.

“And we cater for the elderly that like a blooming good laugh.

“Also, I’d like me give a special mention to Tara at the Gordon Arms in Gordon for providing the food and in particular baking a wonderful cake.

“We are a self funding group but receive great help from the Co-op as well as the council who provided the Coronation grant.”
