Former Rangers No.2 Roy Makaay has praised Utrecht for landing Ibrox flop Sam Lammers on loan as being one of the signings of the season.

Lammers, 26, has now scored six goals in his last five games for the Dutch club and will equal a club record for most games scored in a row if he finds the target again this weekend against Go Ahead Eagles.

And former Bayern Munich and Netherlands striker Makaay - who was a coach with countryman Giovani van Bronckhorst as Rangers reached the Europa League Final in 2022 - has been impressed with Lammers.

He said: "Sam Lammers has been one of the signings of the year in the Eredivisie. Utrecht manager Ron Jans is a top boss and the job he has done has been incredible. It's especially impressive when you consider where they came from.

"They haven't lost to anyone for a long time apart from Ajax and Feyenoord and they are great fun to watch. And with signing Sam Lammers on loan, he has made a very smart move."

Lammers admits he's determined to get Utrecht into the European places. He said: "From the first moment I arrived at the club, I said I wanted to try and get Utrecht into Europe next season.

"At that time it was a bit bolder to say than now because we were down the table, but it is now a lot more realistic and we are playing well and creating lots of chances."
