Aldi’s own brand of gin has been named among the best in the world at a global wine and spirits awards.

The supermarket's Haysmith's Rhubarb & Ginger Gin was featured at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC).

Despite costing less than £15 for a 70cl bottle, the alcoholic treat beat Edinburgh Gin’s Rhubarb & Ginger – which retails around double the price of Aldi’s bottle.

Adding to Aldi’s ever-growing trophy cabinet, the own-brand gin won the highest possible award, a Gold Outstanding, scoring the highest points within the competition.

What did the judges say about Aldi’s Haysmith's Rhubarb & Ginger Gin?

Aldi’s flavoursome gin was described by judges as “magnificently well balanced with full, rich flavours of mouth-watering rhubarb, fiery ginger and chaste juniper.”

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “We are extremely proud to have received the highest possible accolade for our own brand spirits.

“Now more than ever, we want to show that low prices don’t mean compromising on quality or taste.”
