Five Scottish restaurants were named among the top 100 in the UK in 2022 by a prestigious national food award, with a small venue in Argyll and Bute being named the best in Scotland.

The National Restaurant Awards, a UK-wide certification of excellence, placed the Scottish eateries at 23, 84, 90, 92 and 97, respectively.

So, here are some of the best Scottish and British restaurants of 2022.

23 - Inver - Strachur

The establishment, which lies on the shores of Loch Fyne, was praised for its use of quality ingredients like native game, simply prepared seafood, and locally foraged and farmed goods.

The restaurant's current owners, Chef Pamela Brunton and her husband Rob, took over the eatery in 2015 and have since turned it into “the sort of place they like to spend time.”

Chef Brunton has lots of experience in the cooking world, spending time at some of the world’s most revered and forward-thinking restaurants.

The Inver boasts a cosy lounge bar, providing the perfect preamble to a well-crafted meal in the heart of Scotland’s breathtaking Argyll and Bute region.

About an hour and a half from Glasgow and two and a half hours from Edinburgh, Inver finds itself anchored to the West Coast by rolling hills.

The dining experience was built in an old crofter’s cottage and boat store near the town of Strachur and was also awarded the new Michelin Green Star for its focus on sustainability and the protection of biodiversity.

The Inver offers an à la carte lunch and dinner menu, meaning food can be ordered as separate items rather than part of a set meal.

There is also a four-course tasting menu available in the evening which uses current cooking techniques and a combination of wild and farmed ingredients to create modern twists on traditional Scottish dishes.

84 - Ondine Oyster & Grill - Edinburgh

This seafood-based restaurant in the heart of Scotland’s capital is renowned for its ingredients which are known to be rich in quality.

The eatery was founded by Edinburgh-born chef, Roy Brett in 2009 and offers an excellent place to “relax and truly enjoy the finest seafood and shellfish from the East Coast of Scotland and beyond” according to the restaurant.

90 - The Little Chartroom - Edinburgh

This bistro on Bonnighton Road was opened by duo Chef-patron Roberta Hall-McCarren and Shaun McCarren after stints as chefs in some of the capital’s top restaurants.

After becoming restaurant managers at Castle Terrace and later The Abbot’s Elm, the pair decided to open their own site on Leith Walk.

Named for Hall-McCarron's love of sailing, The Little Chartroom is one of Edinburgh’s most modern locations and is known the country-over for its seasonal British-style dishes with a French accent.

92 - Aizle - Edinburgh

This ambitious restaurant refuses to play by the rules, with chef Stuart Ralston claiming to make ‘everything’ in-house. From his sourdough bread and hand-churned butter to his aged aquavit, Aizle makes everything its own.

Ralston worked his way through some of the most coveted food locations in the world. From New York, he soon found himself in Edinburgh where he opened his very own restaurant.

The eatery, which is named for a Scottish noun that refers to a glowing hot ember or a spark, is suitably titled as it is innovative in how it serves its food.

Patrons are given a list of fresh ingredients and asked to cross out the ones they don’t like. Ralston and his team then create dishes for all tastes.

97 – The Palmerston – Edinburgh

The Palmerston is a homey bistro located in a gorgeous 19th-century bank that has a very intimate Parisian feel despite the high ceilings.

The menu is always changing so that new and regular patrons have something different waiting for them when they enter.

The bistro is not a place for those counting calories as The Palmerston offers a three-course lunch menu for under £20. The restaurant is open at 9am for breakfast from Tuesday to Sunday and is renowned for its pastries and glazed doughnuts.
