VALE of Leithen ran out winners of Saturday's 10th Alec Lucas Memorial Tournament at Whitestone Park.

Chris Anderson's managed to qualify through the rounds and edge out amateur neighbours Leithen Rovers in the final.

And they did it with 65-year-old committee man Bobby Craigie in goal.

Following a thrilling final against Leithen Rovers, Vale manager Chris Anderson told us: "The Alec Lucas Memorial Tournament is always a nice day out and it's a bonus when you get all the way to the final and win it.

"We are all very proud to have our name added to the trophy - many of us remember Alec well.

"We were without a goalkeeper in the morning and when Bobby turned up with the kit we asked him if he'd stand in.

"He did pretty well for a 65-year-old and has put himself in the shop window ahead of the new season."

Since the tragic death of Marine Alec Lucas in Afghanistan during a tour of duty in November, 2008, his friends and family have staged the annual tournament at Whitestone Park in his memory.

Alec played for many local teams, including this year's winners Vale of Leithen, before joining the Royal Marines.

Over the past nine years more than £130,000 has been raised for military and local football causes.

The total was boosted again on Saturday as teams from as far away as Chester and Arbroath headed to Peebles to compete for the trophy.

And despite the afternoon showers a good crowd once again turned out to support the event.

Alec's father, Adrian said: "We couldn't have done this without the unwavering support of people in and around Peeblesshire.

"The weather let us down slightly this year but the standard of football was excellent and the children did really well in their games.

"It was good yet again to see such good support in helping us remember our lovely son."
