STEVEN GERRARD hopes his England hero Paul Gascoigne will one day be allowed to take his place in the Scottish Football Hall of Fame after his shock awards snub this month.

The Rangers legend was set to be honoured at a dinner in Glasgow on Sunday but his invitation was controversially withdrawn just days after it was announced he would take his place amongst some of the most famous names in our game.

The decision to reverse Gazza’s nomination caused outcry amongst his friends and former team-mates and infuriated the Rangers supporters that saw him light up Scottish football during his Ibrox career.

And Gers boss Gerrard has been bemused by the call to snub the former Three Lions maestro and overlook Gazza for a place in the Hampden Hall of Fame.

Gerrard said: “I was disappointed with the decision. I don’t know if you’ve read my autobiography, but from that book it’s clear he was my hero.

“He was my England hero growing up. I had Jonny Barnes and Ian Rush at Liverpool and Gazza for England.

“The 1990 World Cup was the first one I followed and he was terrific in the competition.

“He was one of the best players in the world at the time. I bought the DVDs, the shirts, the videos.

“I was gutted for him and for me it’s the wrong decision, he should be in there. And hopefully one day they see sense and it gets resurrected.

“I guarantee the people who have decided not to put him in were on the edge of their seat, the edge of their couch, jumping round when he was on TV.

“If they are football people, they would have enjoyed watching Paul Gascoigne and they would appreciate the man as a footballer. He should be in.

“I just feel for Gazza because he deserved the accolade. I am picturing him playing now when I was a young boy.

“Our living room stopped when Gazza was on the box and I was lucky enough to share a pitch with him and compete against him. I was lucky enough to have conversations with him and what a man, what a player.”
