Peebles Rovers 1

Dunbar United 2

PEEBLES almost made it two in a row on Saturday against former junior side Dunbar.

It wasn't the best of days for football with persistent rain and heavy underfoot conditions.

But the mood was quickly lifted as Rovers edged in front in the ninth minute.

Alan McMath did well to pick out Grant Wilson with a pass inside the area and the towering striker's shot was blocked in front of goal by the arm of Dunbar's Steven Tait.

Wilson tucked away the penalty.

Only the heroics of Tom Kerr in the Rovers goal prevented a Fraser McLaren pulling Dunbar level on the quarter hour.

But there was nothing he could do three minutes later as Dean Ballantyne smashed a volley high into the net from inside the area.

Peebles almost restored their advantage midway through the half as a Callum McKenzie effort was cleared off the line.

Wilson was also denied in the 41st minute by a fine John Johnstone save.

Although Peebles created the best chances Dunbar had controlled a lot of the ball.

And it only took the visitors three minutes to go in front with Fraser McLaren firing beyond Kerr.

Only a terrific recovery tackle by Ben Grettel prevented McLaren going in on goal again just five minutes later.

But the speed of McMath almost earned Peebles an equaliser at the other end as the striker's shot was palmed away by Johnstone.

Both teams were creating as play flowed up and down the boggy Whitestone Park.

In stoppage time Wilson went within inches of equalising with a powerful header.
