WATSONIANS showed their sevens class when they lifted the Border Toyota Kelso Sevens on Saturday with a 31-19 victory over Boroughmuir in the final.

The win made it a third success in a row for the Edinburgh club on the spring circuit.

They turned round 19-7 ahead with two tries by Lewis Berg, the Callander Family Cup Player-of-the-Tournament, and one by Scott McKean to a score from Johnny Matthews

Boroughmuir cut the deficit twice after the break through Greg Cannie and Tom Wilson, but Ewan Miller and McKean sealed it for Watsonians.

Boroughmuir won the first of the semi-finals against Kelso thanks to a hat-trick of tries from Matthews and others by Gavin Welsh, Tom Wilson and Gavin Parker.

But Watsonians were taken to extra time in a gruelling second semi by Jed-Forest before going through with a McKean try.

Watsonians led 17-5 at half-time with tries by McKean, Ben Robbins and Berg to a try by Gary Munro. After the interval, scores from twins Gregor and Lewis Young and then Monty Mitchell put Jed in front until Ali Harris levelled the scores.

There was a shock in the first of the quarter-finals as Edinburgh Accies, winners at Gala and runners-up at Melrose and Hawick, fielded an understrength side and lost to Jed-Forest after beating Selkirk in round one, while Jed also saw off Hawick.

Jed and Kelso were the only Borders clubs to make any impact without ever really challenging the finalists.
