A TOTAL of seven pairs took to the courts at Duns to compete for the Tennis Borders Open 35+ Mixed Doubles.

Couples played each of the other six for a 30-minute timed match when each game won counted towards their final score.

Ties were very hard fought but sporting and the standard was high.

Eventual winners Jonny Short of Wilton Park and Lisa Campbell of Peebles, who proved too strong for the others, winning 63 games in their three hours of actual play.

Jonny and Lisa were the first ever winners of the championship two years ago when it was held at Kelso Orchard Tennis Club.

Local couple Andrew Plenderleith and Chris Jackson were runners-up at this year's competition.

Christine Lawrie from Tennis Borders, who refereed the matches, said: "We would like to thank the Duns Club for the use of its facilities and for the excellent catering.

"We'd also like to thank the entrants for their support.

"It is hoped that this event will grow in popularity each year."
