IF any icing was required for Biggar's cake this season, it came on Friday evening when they were named Club of the Season.

The great and good of Scottish rugby converged on the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh for the Scottish Rugby Club Awards.

The annual ceremony celebrates the players, coaches, match officials and volunteers from across the domestic game.

Taking the coveted Tennent's Men’s Club of the Season was Biggar.

Hartree Mill President John Bogle couldn't hide his delight.

He said: "It’s mind-blowing, seriously mind-blowing to win this award.

"I was sitting listening to the intro and I knew what our club had done this year and I was proud of what our club has done.

"When our name was announced, I honestly didn’t believe it and I still don’t quite believe it.”

While the exploits of Biggar's first team have been highlight every week in the Peeblesshire News as they ganed promotion to National Division One as champions, it is the ongoing work at all levels that earned the Hartree Mill club Friday's honour.

The club's Under 16s Boys team were cup finalists, as well as District Shield winners. Biggar Girls Under 18s won the National Shield, and three of the club's four Mini age groups earned Spirit of Rugby awards.

Several of their age-level players have been selected to play for Scotland, and Biggar also retained three awards at the Clydesdale District Council Sports Awards.

A spokesman for the SRU said: "Biggar is very much a family affair, where in the main, the responsibility for coaching falls on the hard-working volunteers - dads and mums, and friends of the club who work tirelessly to help their charges develop skills and enjoy the game of rugby.

"The club recently improved their clubhouse facilities and strive to offer the best possible facilities and coaching for their players. Biggar RFC works in the community bringing rugby to a growing number of schools in the area and work with other organisations in the wider community, allowing different groups access to their new pitches."

Following Friday's celebrations Biggar's hard-working volunteers are now preparing for the AGM on June 19.

All members are invited to attend and have their say on future plans.
