STRUGGLING Gordon have vowed to return to the Border Amateur League after withdrawing for the remainder of this season.

The Division A side re-entered the league in 2012/13, winning a total of nine trophies in that time.

But a spokesman for the Stewart Park club said: “It has been a struggle ever since the start of the season in terms of a lack of players for training and games.

“We would like to thank all players, coaches, committee members, sponsors and people in the village who helped get the club back up and running in 2012.

“We intend to re-group and join the league again in Division C next season.”

With nine teams left in Division A, three matches went ahead on Saturday with wins for Newtown, Greenlaw and Tweeddale Rovers.

Andrew Crawford and Darren Blacklock scored for Newtown in a 2-0 win at Jed Legion which kept the Villagers top of the league.

Adam Smith bagged two for Greenlaw in a tense victory over Langholm Legion and Luke MacLean’s double saw Tweeddale Rovers win their first game of the season at home to Hawick United.

Stow also won their first game in Division B as Fraser Jackson claimed two in a 5-2 triumph over Coldstream Amateurs.

Daniel Cairnie and Fraser Brown scored two each to help Gala Hotspur thump Kelso Thistle 5-1.

Duns made it six wins out of six games in all competitions by beating Leithen Rovers 4-0 – with Ross Hutchison claiming two goals – while Tweedmouth Harrow and Tweedmouth Amateurs also picked up three points with big wins.

Sprinter Lee Goodfellow swapped his running spikes for football boots to score two for Earlston Rhymers in a superb 6-3 win at Hawick Legion in Division C.

Marc Macfayden helped Gala Fairydean Rovers to a win at CFC Bowholm to pull level with Earlston but it is Selkirk Victoria who remain top after thrashing Kelso Amateurs 7-0 with Grant Brownlee and Darren Munro bagging two a piece.

There were also wins for Highfields United and St Boswells.
