Three out of the four-man Under 20s Scotland Hill Running team for the forthcoming Home Internationals are from the Borders.

Joining Lucas Cheskin from Peebles in the team, which was announced yesterday (Thursday), are Thomas Otton from Heriot and former Gala Harrier Gavin Bryson.

Otton claimed silver in the final leg of this year’s Scottish Junior Hill Running League at Aberfoyle on Sunday - which doubled up as the Scottish trials - finishing just over a minute behind East Sutherland’s Ross Gollan in the 7km Under 20s race.

Bryson, finished third with Cheskin from the Moorfoot club in fourth.

British Under 20s champion Jacob Adkin from Peebles misses the Home Internationals due to his call up for the GB team at the World Championships on the same day.

Moorfoot coach Gregor Nicholson said: “Lucas is due his Moorfoot clubmate Jacob Adkin a Caldwell’s knickerbocker glory for opening the Scotland selection door via his non-availability due to being in the GB Worlds team the same day.” After her excellent PB on the track over 1500m at the Scottish Championships last weekend Mairi Wallace from the Moorfoots club put in another really strong performance on Sunday to come third in the Under 17 girls race behind two of Scotland’s top cross-country runners Laura Stark and Emily Nicholson.

And she was also rewarded with a call up to the Scotland team.

The Junior Home Internationals are due to be held in Betws-y-Coed in Wales on September 19.

In the Under 15 league races on Sunday Beth Hobbs from Peebles showed a return to form with her fourth place in 21.41 and Ethan Elder was sixth in a hot and closely contested boys’ race in 19.43.
