A FULL safety investigation has been launched following the suspected carbon monoxide poisoning of a man near Peebles at the weekend.

Michael Travers from Lanarkshire died at a holiday chalet on the outskirts of the town just before midnight on Saturday.

Emergency services were rushed to Soonhope after a report that three occupants of a holiday chalet had taken unwell.

The 59-year-old victim's wife, Mary, remained in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary during the week.

And the couple's son, Scott, was released on Monday following treatment.

Police received a call from the property at 11.45pm.

By the time officers arrived Mr Travers had died, believed to be from carbon monoxide poisoning.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland told the Peeblesshire News: "A 59-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A

60-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

"Inquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this are currently ongoing."

Mr Travers, who was a building company boss, regularly visited the chalet from his home at Larkhall.

A police cordon was in place throughout Sunday while officers carried out an investigation.

The Health and Safety Executive are also carrying out a probe into the source of the gas leak.

A spokeswoman said: "We are investigating the cause of the incident at Peebles."

Carbon monoxide, which is dubbed the silent killer, has no smell or taste.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness breathlessness and a loss of consciousness and it often strikes while people are already asleep.
